About 2000 years ago in Nazareth, Galilee, there lived a young girl named Mary. Mary’s parents had decided that she would marry a man called Joseph, but one day an angel appeared to her. She was terrified because she had never seen an angel before. He said to her, “Do not be afraid. You have found favour with God. You are going to have a son.” She asked, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” The angel said, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you. So the child to be born will be called the Son of God.” So Mary said, “Ok then.”
Then Mary got up and hurried to see her cousin Elizabeth who was in the sixth month of her pregnancy with John The Baptist. When Mary got there, Elizabeth said, “Blessed am I that the mother of my Lord should come to me. When you got here, the baby leapt in my womb for joy.”
When Joseph, Mary’s fiancé, found out she was pregnant, he was very worried. He loved her, but he thought she must have been naughty. In their culture, this was very serious. So he decided to quietly break their commitment. Then he had a dream. In the dream, an angel said to him, “Joseph, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. What is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.” So Joseph woke up and married her.
In those days, Caesar Augustus issued a decree that everyone go to their hometown to be numbered. This was the first census when Quirinius was governor of Syria. Joseph had to go to Bethlehem, Judea for the census because he was from there. He took Mary, his wife, who was heavily pregnant. While they were in Bethlehem, Mary went into labour. They searched for a place to stay but all the rooms were full because everyone was in town for the census. They found a place in an animal barn. When Jesus was born, Mary wrapped her son in soft rags and laid him in a feed-trough.
There were shepherds in the fields nearby, watching their sheep at night. Suddendy, an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone all around them. They were very afraid. The angel said, “Fear not. Look, I bring you good news of great joy, which will be for all people. This day, in the city of David, a Saviour is born, who is Christ the Lord.” A whole group of angels then appeared in the sky, singing praises to God. The shepherds rushed into town and found the baby in the feed trough like the angel had said. They knelt down and worshipped him. Then they went out and spread the news of what they had been told about this Child.
But Mary wondered about all these things in her heart.
The greatest Christmas gift of all is that 2019 years ago when Jesus was born, the angel said, “Look, I bring you good news of great joy, which will be for all people. Today, in the city of David, a Saviour is born, who is Christ the Lord.”
